Fibromyalgia is a common condition characterized by chronic diffuse pain with characteristic tender points without signs of inflammation.

Women are much more affected than men especially with aging.

The aetiology of fibromyalgia is poorly understood but physical or emotional trauma may be the cause of it.

Signs and symptoms:

  • Diffuse muscle pain
  • Stiffness
  • Fatigue
  • Focal tender points at occiput, trapezius, supraspinatus, second rib, lateral epicondyle, gluteus and greater trochanter, knees.
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Palpitations
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Irritable bowel syndrome

Diagnosis of fibromyalgia depends on excluding other diseases causing same symptoms as most of the laboratory tests appear normal in fibromyalgia.

After excluding other diseases causing same symptoms, diagnosis of fibromyalgia requires at least 11 / 18 tender points and history of widespread pain lasting for more than three monthes.
