Medical Tourism

Medical tourism (also called medical travel, health tourism or global healthcare) is simply the process of traveling abroad to a specific destination to obtain certain medical procedures.

Every year more and more medical tourists are visiting various destinations for receiving top quality treatment at affordable prices.

Medical tourism is actually thousands of years old. In ancient Greece, pilgrims and patients came from all over the Mediterranean to the sanctuary of the healing god, Asklepios, at Epidaurus. In Roman Britain, patients took the waters at a shrine at Bath, a practice that continued for 2,000 years. From the 18th century wealthy Europeans travelled to spas from Germany to the Nile. In the 21st century, relatively low-cost jet travel has taken the industry beyond the wealthy and desperate.

Nowadays popular elective medical services include knee or hip joint replacements, cardiac surgery, cosmetic surgery and dental surgery. Patients in need of emergency procedures are also attracted to this concept as the wait period for certain operations can take up to a year or more in their own countries. Often they can have the procedure done immediately in another country.

The best destinations for medical tourism include Thailand, India, Singapore, turkey, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Mexico…etc.

It’s good to be wise. Educate yourself by doing some research about your physician. Determine if she/he had proper certification and credentials to avoid such unacceptable surgical malpractices.
