Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome


Ehlers danlos syndrome is a group of connective tissue disorders that are caused by defect in the genes responsible for collagen synthesis.

Signs and symptoms:

1- Loose joints
2- Arthralgia
3- Easily damaged and bruised skin
4- Poor wound healing
5- Soft and velvety skin
6- Flat feet
7- Muscle fatigue
8- Fragile blood vessels

Types:

1- Classical
2- Hypermobility
3- Vascular
4- Kyphoscoliosis
5- Arthrochalasis
6- Dermatosparaxis

Diagnosis:

The diagnosis of Ehlers danlos syndrome is based upon the clinical findings and the family history.
Additional tests may be needed as genetic tests, skin biopsy, Echocardiogram.

Treatment:

There is no cure for Ehlers danlos syndrome but physical therapy and pain killers may be needed in addition to close monitoring for the cardiovascular system as the disease may be accompanied by valvular heart disease.
